CPD and lifelong learning

Professionals in healthcare regulatory affairs work in an environment of constantly changing legal, technical and scientific requirements. We need to undertake continuing professional development (CPD) to ensure that we remain safe and effective in our daily practice.

All members of TOPRA are bound by the statement of values, which requires them to 'continually improve performance and update or refresh their skills and knowledge'. For Registered Members of TOPRA - who use the designation MTOPRA - we consider 50 hours per year spent on learning to be the minimum.

A strong personal programme of continuing professional development, properly recorded, will also build your confidence and credibility at work and give you an evidence base for appraisals.

TOPRA recommends that regulatory professionals wanting to achieve or maintain their MTOPRA designation undertake a minimum of 50 hours of lifelong learning each year, to demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development and keep their knowledge and skills up to date. There are plenty of activities that count towards your CPD, including TOPRA courses , conferences , webinars and our CPD supplement quiz.

We also recommend keeping a log of activities, copies of attendance certificates and other evidence of your learning.

The learning cycle

The 'learning cycle' concept is well recognised and used by many organisations to support effective continuous professional development and lifelong learning in all biomedical sciences. Thinking about the different stages of the learning cycle can help you get the most out of your continuous professional development activities.

TOPRA is signed up to the IMI Lifetrain Agreed Principles and is a member of the Science Council, which has also adopted the learning cycle concept.




Applying the learning cycle

Successful regulatory specialists will look at the competency framework, see what skills they need to acquire, plan how they will acquire them, carry out lifelong learning activities and evaluate how effective it has been. They will then record what they have done and its impact on their day-to-day work and career advancement.
