Held annually since 2004, the TOPRA Symposium is Europe’s premier conference for healthcare regulatory affairs. With dedicated programme streams for human medicines, medical devices and IVDs, and veterinary medicines, the Symposium is the must-attend event in the regulatory affairs calendar.

The Symposium is open to anyone working in or interested in regulatory affairs, and gathers delegates, speakers and exhibitors from across industry, regulatory bodies, academia and related sectors. In addition to hearing the latest insights and developments, it is also provides valuable opportunities to network and make new contacts.

This year’s TOPRA Symposium took place in Lisbon, Portugal, on 23-25 October and was held in partnership with Infarmed, Portugal’s national authority of medicines and health products. See our short video below for our highlights.

Symposium programmes

The 2023 Symposium programmes were developed by working parties under the leadership of the following Chairs:

Human Medicines Symposium

Francesca Buttigieg

Director of Regulatory Affairs

PTC Therapeutics, Inc | Switzerland
It is with great pleasure that I, on behalf of TOPRA, invite you to attend this year’s Symposium. As always, the Human Medicines Symposium working party promises to deliver the latest intelligence and insights on global regulatory affairs.

With European and US Regulations at a crucial inflection point, subject matter experts and lead speakers from both the European Medicines Agency and the US Food and Drug Administration will help us navigate unchartered territory in regulatory affairs. And what better place to do just that than in Lisbon, the location for this year’s Symposium, from where new routes of navigation were discovered.

We will be actively encouraging discussions and debates, and networking with colleagues joining us from across the world. I hope to see as many of you as possible in Lisbon for a fruitful Symposium with has the ultimate goal of advancing global healthcare together.

I’ve been attending the TOPRA Veterinary Symposium for the majority of my regulatory career and it remains one of the highlights of my calendar from a learning and networking perspective. In such a small industry sector, it has the feel of an annual extended family gathering.

Not only does the Symposium represent a brilliant opportunity to keep up-to-date with current regulatory topics, it provides the chance to have lively and insightful discussions with peers from other companies.

With plenty of breaks between informative sessions, it’s the only forum where it’s possible to network informally with the regulators and build those important relationships. With a great a mixture of subject matter experts drawn from industry and agencies, and an informal platform for networking, it really is an unmissable special event.

Medical Devices/IVDs Symposium and overall event

Margareth Jorvid

CEO, Regulatory Affairs & Quality Assurance

Methra Uppsala AB Sweden
This year’s Medical Devices/IVD Symposium will be an excellent opportunity to hear the latest news about the implementation of the MD and IVD Regulations and how different regulations can impact your product development.

We will look at clinical investigations and performance testing, and how best to support small companies and start-ups. In addition, we will address software as a medical device (SaMD), the global registration of IVDs and post-market challenges.

There will also be time to meet and network with colleagues from across the international regulatory affairs community. Take the opportunity to join us in sunny Lisbon in October – I look forward to seeing you there!
