TOPRA’s Annual Summit, which took place in May earlier this year, gathered senior industry professionals and key opinion leaders virtually to discuss the most topical issue to face regulators since 2020 – the COVID-19 pandemic, and how, in the face of adversity, regulators have carved new paths to make the impossible possible.
Developers and regulators discussed the flexibility, pragmatism and creativity deployed over the past 18 months. They considered whether it would be possible to replicate this impressive feat for other important medicines. While acknowledging that many changes simply could not be adapted as the norm, what could be learned and translated into future regulation?
Discussions concluded that collaboration will be needed to enable harmonised regulation; education is required to support the development of the next generation of regulators and inspire confidence from the public; transparency will build trust; and, finally, this all needs to be achieved in a sustainable manner.
