Hristov demonstrates determination and progress at Bulgarian Agency

Addressing the largest ever TOPRA Annual Symposium in Copenhagen, Dr. Emil Hristov, Director of the Bulgarian Drug Agency, set out in detail his Agency’s work to become a member of the European Regulatory Network as a new member state since January. His message to delegates was clear—the BDA has made tremendous progress and will, in good time, become a first-rate regulatory agency in Europe.

Hristov said that it was through foresight and determination that Bulgaria actually began implementing with European Directives and Regulation even before becoming Member State. Further measures like participation in technical working groups, education and training of agency staff have left Bulgaria well-placed for its difficult experience of transition over the past 9 months.

However, the challenges ahead cannot be underestimated. They range from building IT and financial capacity to training and education to simply transposing the text of directives into a functioning system within national law. Furthermore, the BDA now faces new pressures, shifting its focus from National-only priorities to wider participation in the European Regulatory Network.

It is these challenges and the demand for resources that will keep Hristov and his team looking to the 2010 and beyond.

The Symposium continues through Friday.
